The Reedsburg Wisconsin Dells Youth Hockey team honored the late Evelyn Gurney by hosting a memorial tournament last weekend. The 13-year-old’s life was tragically cut short on May 12, 2023, when she was hit by a truck driver while attempting to board the school bus.

In memory of Gurney, RWD Youth Hockey created two enduring tributes: a banner above center ice displaying her name, number, and the phrase “Forever in our hearts and on our ice,” and her nickname “EV42” designed and etched into the ice permanently. The team also organized the inaugural memorial tournament in her honor for youth girls and boys hockey players on October 21-22.

Coach Joe Uminski shared his appreciation for the outpouring of support from the hockey community, highlighting the small yet tight-knit world of hockey where people come together during challenging times. Gurney’s parents were actively involved in the memorial plans, and the donations raised during the tournament were directed towards supporting the RWD Youth Hockey Program.

Reflecting on Gurney’s hypothetical reaction to the attention, Uminski mentioned that she would likely be bashful and shy about the extra attention but happy to be remembered on the ice, given her passion for the game. Gurney’s teammates now play hockey in her memory, dedicating their efforts to honor her love for the sport and camaraderie with her teammates.

Players expressed their commitment to playing hard and fast in Gurney’s memory, emphasizing that each victory is a tribute to her. The EV42 Memorial Tournament was open to the public and took place at Poppy Waterman Ice Arena in Lake Delton on Saturday and at the Reedsburg Community Ice Arena on Sunday.
